The Philosophy of The Randolph School
Randolph School is a unique pre-Kindergarten through
12th grade school, which was founded in 1963 by a group of teachers
and parents who shared a belief in children's innate desire and
ability to learn. They wanted to create a school where children
would be respected, trusted, encouraged and supported to develop
their full potential in all areas of their lives.
Grounded in the educational philosophy of John Dewey
and in Jean Piaget’s insights into children’s cognitive
development, Randolph School serves families who seek an alternative
educational experience for their children. Our families come to
the school because of its progressive approach, multi-age groupings,
commitment to diversity, smaller class size and student-teacher
ratios, support of children with certain learning differences, passion
for the arts and for the natural environment, and emphasis on community.
At Randolph School the teachers choose educational activities based
on their knowledge of each child as well as on developmental and
age-appropriate curriculums.
In June, 2006, Randolph School parent and board
member, Ken Lerner, gave the commencement speech at our first High
School graduation. Read his eloquent perspective
on Randolph School's philosophy here.
In December, 2006, the Upstairs students held
a
Musical Morning Fundraiser for Toys For Tots.
The entire process was indicative of how the Randolph School chooses
to approach education. To read an account of this special event
