Philosophy of Education - Parent Study Group

If you are interested, please write Dan (momshead at gmail dot com) for the address. You are welcome to join the group for as many or as few sessions as you want. As you make your way through each reading, please keep in mind questions that you would like to bring to the group for discussion.  Remember, almost anything that is even tangentially related to the piece can be a starting point for engaged philosophical discussion.

April 30 - Here is the reading for our fourth gathering – the first part of Israel Scheffler’s “The Concept of the Educated Person.”  The second part of the piece is Scheffler’s defense of his conception, which we will read only after discussing the conception itself.

March 26 - We will be reading Theodor Adorno’s “Education After Auschwitz.”

February 27 - Our next reading is a beautiful piece called “The Rhythmic Claims of Freedom and Discipline” by Alfred North Whitehead, who is actually best known for his work in philosophy of mathematics and metaphysics.  Not to worry though – this piece is wholly dedicated to education, and is not at all a difficult read.
